Program Note
This piece is largely compiled from a group of sketches for string quartet that has been reworked for the Fab5. The sketches were made prior to my move to New York City in anticipation of an adventure. When thinking of the theme to group these ideas together I reflected on the almost medieval or folk-like opening phrases and the simple thematic material present throughout the work. While the material gets rather complicated, the medieval music quality is at the heart of this work. I have long had an attachment to medieval settings and music stemming from my love of medieval fantasy and early church music. I often base my titles on existing literature and art and the story that initially jumped out to me was The Green Knight. The title "Marvels in the Mountains" is taken from a line in this tale, whereas Sir Gawain has set out on an adventure and the narrator is describing his feats. While this piece is not necessarily programatic or based on any plot points in the story of The Green Knight, I think this line reflects the spirit of this work.
